Configure field validation (text, number, date constraints)

Schema fields can have validation rules, such as text length limits, number ranges, or date constraints. This article covers configuring field validation.

Validation only applies to Text, Number, and Date fields — Dropdown and Yes/No fields don't have a validation panel. (Dropdown fields instead require at least one option to be entered.)

Adding validation to a field

  1. In the schema editor (build a custom project details schema), on a Text, Number, or Date field, click Add validation.

  2. Fill in the constraints for that field's type:

    Field typeAvailable constraints
TextMin length, Max length, Pattern (regex)
    NumberMin value, Max value
    DateMin date, Max date
  3. Click Hide validation to collapse the panel again — your values are kept.

Validation errors while editing

The schema editor checks constraints as you type and blocks Save until they're resolved:

  • For a Text field, if Min length is greater than Max length, an error is shown under the fields.
  • If the Pattern you enter isn't a valid regular expression, an error is shown under the Pattern field.
  • For a Dropdown field with no options entered, an "Add at least one option" error is shown.

These constraints are optional — leave any of them blank to skip that rule.
