Configure stage activation (on share, manual, after another stage)

A stage can activate when the asset is shared, manually by a user, or automatically after a previous stage completes. This article covers the available activation modes.

The three activation modes

Open a stage card and select the Activate panel. Choose one of:

  • When workflow is applied — starts immediately when this workflow is applied to an asset.
  • Manual — someone with manage permission starts the stage themselves, rather than it starting automatically.
  • After another stage — the stage triggers based on another stage's outcome.

Configuring "After another stage"

When you select After another stage, an Activate when condition builder appears:

  1. For each condition, pick the predecessor stage (shown by its P#/A# label) and the outcome to watch for.
  2. The available outcomes depend on the predecessor stage's type:
    • Approval predecessors offer: is approved, is approved with changes, needs rework, is decided, is overdue.
    • Production predecessors offer: is completed, is skipped, is overdue.
  3. Click Add another condition to add more conditions.
  4. When there's more than one condition, a toggle pill between them switches the logic between AND and OR — click it to flip.
  5. Remove a condition with the x button on its row.

If no conditions are set, the "After another stage" trigger has nothing to actually wait on, so add at least one condition for it to take effect.

Where this applies

Activation mode is set per stage — different stages in the same template can use different modes (e.g. the first stage activates "When workflow is applied", while every stage after it activates "After another stage").
