Workflow Abandonment Rate
The Workflow Abandonment Rate card on the VR Dashboard tracks how often assets stall or exit a workflow before reaching approval. This article covers how to read the card and what it means for your team.
This is a read-only metric tile — it reflects workflow activity automatically.
What it measures
Workflow Abandonment Rate is the percentage of workflow instances, from the trailing several months, that have not reached completion within 14 days of being started. A workflow doesn't need to be explicitly cancelled to count here — simply sitting incomplete past that window is enough.
How to read it
- The headline number is the abandonment percentage.
- A warn marker appears past 10%, and critical past 25%.
- Underneath, the card shows the raw split between stalled and still-active workflow instances.
- The card needs at least 10 workflow instances before it shows a value.
Why it matters
A high abandonment rate suggests workflows are being kicked off without the resources, ownership, or intent to see them through — work that's effectively lost even though it was never formally cancelled. It's worth reading alongside Stage Bottleneck to see whether abandonment clusters around a particular stage.
